More than 2.5 million pilgrims to perform Hajj today

More than 2.5 million pilgrims have gathered in Arafat to perform Hajj today (Saturday).

Main rites of Hajj have been started from Friday (8th of Dhul Hijja). Pilgrims gathered in Mina, around five kilometres (three miles) east of the holy mosque.On the 9th of Dhul Hijja (today), is the climax of the hajj season as all pilgrims have been gathered on the Mount Arafat and its surrounding plain. Pilgrims will stay at Arafat until the evening reciting from the Holy Quran and praying. Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) is believed to have delivered his final hajj sermon on Mount Arafat. After sunset, pilgrims will leave for Muzdalifah, halfway between Arafat and Mina, where they will stay at least until midnight. They will gather pebbles in Muzdalifah to perform the symbolic “stoning of the devil.”After dawn prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, or the Eid Al-Adha feast, pilgrims will head back to Mina. The first of three stoning rites, known as Jamarat al-Aqabah, begins after sunrise. Traditionally, seven pebbles are thrown at a post representing the devil. Since 2004 it has been replaced by walls to accommodate the rising numbers of pilgrims.Having done with the first stoning, pilgrims can proceed to offer sacrifice. This rite is to emulate Hazrat Ibrahim who prepared to sacrifice his son Hazrat Ishmael on the order of God, who provided a lamb in the boy’s place at the last moment.Following the sacrifice, men shave their heads or just trim their hair. Women cut a fingertip-length of their hair. They can then end their Ihram and change into their usual clothing.Pilgrims then will head to the holy site in Makkah, perform Tawaf al-Efadha, circumambulating seven times around the Kaaba, then perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. Milliken-Smith said Butt had approached the agent at the 2009 Twenty20 World Cup, complaining that junior teammates had more lavish lifestyles because they were into illegal fixing.In January 2010, Butt and another unnamed player told Majeed they wanted to be involved and at another meeting in February, they said they wanted to add more players to the scheme, the lawyer told the court.Majeed was introduced to an Indian bookmaker called Sanjay and it was agreed that the agent would be the middle man between the bookie and the cricketers.Majeed “was, we respectfully submit, yes, the arranger for the players. He was not the corruptor”, his lawyer said.Ali Bajwa, the lawyer for 27-year-old Butt, said his client knew his career was over and he now stood to lose his family too — but he denied Butt initiated the scam.

Appealing for a suspended sentence, he said Butt had been left almost broke by the scandal and had gone from a “national hero to a figure of contempt”.Asif s lawyer meanwhile said it would be “laughable if it were not so serious” if one no-ball was to ruin the 28-year-old s career.In a statement read to the court, Aamer, 19, said he had been put under pressure to cheat and had feared for his future in the national side if he did not get involved.

“I want to apologise to Pakistan and to everyone that cricket is important to. I do know how much damage this has done to the game, the game which I love as well, more than anything else in the world,” he said.But the judge dismissed claims that Aamer was only involved in one episode of spot-fixing, citing suspicious text messages from murky contacts in Pakistan before the preceding Test match at The Oval.Meanwhile, a court in Pakistan has also ordered to file a case against three convicted players. ISLAMABAD - The much awaited by-polls in National Assembly’s constituency NA-172 Dera Ghazi Khan-II finally went in favour of Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-e-Azam) candidate Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari who had outclassed his two powerful rivals with a wide margin, according to unofficial reports.
Till late night on Tuesday, the vote counting in the 226 polling stations of the total 260 stations indicated that the PML-Q contestant had grabbed 62355 votes followed by Hafiz Abdul Karim of Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) with 41589 votes and Sardar Shabbir Leghari from Pakistan People’s party who got 17254. The unconfirmed results from the remaining 34 polling stations also indicated that Awais Leghari was leading the tables with over20755 votes.
The results of NA-172 DG Khan by-polls suggest that this is the third time a govt candidate has met defeat at the hands of Opposition party candidates. A few days back, the JUI-F candidate Ghulam Qadir Bhittani had defeated Dawar Khan Kundi, the joint contestant of PPP and ANP in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly’s by-polls held in PK-69 Tank. Earlier in January, the joint candidate of both these parties Diyar Khan met the same fate after being defeated by Muhammad Rashid of PML-Q in KP Assembly’s by-polls held in PK-87 Shangla. Despite that the Federal and Punjab governments used their all out influence to grab the NA-172 seat that fell vacant after the death of Sardar Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari, father of Awais Legahri, it was reportedly due to the effective measures adopted by Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) that the by-polls were generally held transparently.

DERA GHAZI KHAN: The recent visits of Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and Governor Sardar Latif Ahmed Khosa have not disappointed the masses but also PPP workers who were expecting a mega development package ahead of the by-election scheduled for March 24.
The visits exposed the long-awaited claims of the PPP local office-bearers and demoralised the election campaign, paving the way for a one-to-one contest between the PML-N and PML-Q candidates.
Sardar Shabbir Ahmed Khan Leghari of the PPP, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari of the PML-Q and Hafiz Abdul Kareem of the PML-N are in the race for the by-election to NA-172, which was vacated after the death of former president Sardar Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari. Earlier, the by-election scheduled for December 14 was postponed due to Muharram. Later, a revised schedule was announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan the day when Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani visited the city first time since he took the charge of his office.
It was claimed by PPP candidate Sardar Shabbir Ahmed Khan Leghari that President Asif Ali Zardari had assured him that Sui gas would be provided to Choti Zirin and Kot Chutta besides extension in the existing network of roads and electricity in the remote tribal areas.
The issues were highlighted by PPP workers to muster support for their candidates in the coming by-election. However, the visits failed in achieving the objectives. PPP workers told The News that both visits had disappointed them as they had pinned high hopes with them. The situation also disturbed the PPP candidate and PPP district president when their entry was not allowed at the helipad for receiving the prime minister.

DERA GHAZI KHAN: The candidates of two mainstream political parties are facing a tough time due to poor response from the masses in the by-election to NA-172, a constituency vacated following the death of former president Sardar Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari.
The PML-Q has awarded the ticket to Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari (bicycle), former federal minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, while Sardar Shabbir Ahmed Khan Leghari (arrow) and Hafiz Abdul Kareem (lion) are representing the PPP and the PML-N respectively. The elections are scheduled for March 24 while the polling scheme has also been announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Although certain other factors are also involved, but both big parties are taking least interest in canvassing for their candidates. Both candidates are canvassing with their own resources while supporters are playing the role of a silent spectator. It is being observed that influential families are supporting the PML-Q candidate not on political grounds, but due to their old affiliation with the Leghari Group.
Political analysts believe that the PPP would secure low votes as compared to the 2008 general elections due to poor representation in the area. “The situation was entirely different at that time due to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto that motivated the general voters with development of the soft corner. During the PPP’s three-year term, the federal government has completely ignored the district. Moreover, the PPP contestant cannot motivate the high command and the political leadership of the party to visit the constituency and address the public gathering so far.”
There is another concept that though the PPP candidate is not being considered a winning horse, but his candidature is indirectly favouring PML-Q candidate Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari who is a close relative of PPP’s candidate Shabbir Leghari. PPP workers will never vote for Awais as his father Farooq Ahmed Leghari had dismissed the PPP government on various charges. Votes will be divided, giving an edge to Sardar Awais Khan Leghari.

As far as the PML-N contestant is concerned, he had earlier contested first time against Sardar Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari in 2008 at the time when the PML-N failed to field a solid, experienced and influential contestant. However, he had given a tough time to his high-profile rival that was really unexpected even to the PML-N.

Political pundits are of the view that the by-election is the real test for the PML-N and the PPP. The city that comprises over 50 per cent area of the constituency is presenting a deserted look after all the roads have been cut for the construction. The new water supply and sewerage lines are being laid but owing to mismanagement and poor planning of the bureaucracy and the ruling PML-N, all development activities have been started simultaneously while no project could so far be completed during three years.
During the recent rainy spell that persisted for around two weeks, there was mud everywhere in the city and life came to a standstill. The deep ditches dug out for the sewerage lines, debris, choked sewerage and water pipes are seen everywhere. Deadlines and extended deadlines claimed by the DCO and the commissioner just proved to be a bureaucratic tactic to normalise the situation and satisfy the residents who are facing problems due to incomplete uplift schemes.
The pundits say that the Leghari Group is in a better position while the PML-N candidate seems to be in a strong position in urban areas. Voters are of the view that an unannounced compromise exists between both tribal feudal lords and they are supporting each other. As many as 15 candidates are in the race after JUI candidate Maulana Muhammad Iqbal Rasheed announced support for the PML-Q candidate.

DERA GHAZI KHAN: Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khan Khosa said on Monday that PPP-led government would keep moving forward with the mission of their martyred leader Benazir Bhutto to eliminate terrorism and transform Pakistan into a peaceful country.

Addressing an inaugration ceremony for sub campuses of Bahauddin Zakariya University and Allama Iqbal Open University, Khosa said that Shaheed Benazir Bhutto had the vision of promoting education to eliminate poverty and illiteracy and she believed that terrorism could be wiped out by virtue of development in the education sector.

Promotion of education was part of Benazir Bhutto’s manifesto, said Khosa.

He further added that he visited his hometown DG Khan soon after taking over as Governor to improve education facilities in under-developed and backward areas. – APP

While addressing an audience at the opening ceremony of a regional university, Yousuf Raza Gilani said that he did not want to speak against any leader or political party. He acknowledged that the country is suffering from unemployment, terrorism and lawlessness. He said that these issues cannot be addressed without education and knowledge.

DERA GHAZI KHAN: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Monday those who wanted to impose their “own brand of Sharia” were not sincere with the country and the nation.
“Those who shed the blood of innocent people, target shrines of saints and bomb educational institutions are, in fact, enemies of the country,” added the premier. Addressing different functions in Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh and Multan on Monday, Gilani said he himself belonged to a religious family and he could not even think of changing the Namoos-e-Risalat Qanoon (blasphemy laws). He said no amendments were being made to the blasphemy laws; however, the government would take steps to prevent the misuse of these laws.
Addressing a function at the regional campus of the Allama Iqbal Open University, the premier said the policy of national reconciliation would continue and the Pakistan People’s Party government was determined to strengthen the institutions. He said due to the ongoing reconciliation policy, the government had succeeded in making 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution, giving a new NFC Award and making successes in the war against terrorism.
He announced that an IT University would be set up in DG Khan and the AIOU regional campus would get Rs50 million. The Bahauddin Zakariya University sub-campus in DG Khan will get four new buses for students and staff, he added. He said he did not come to DG Khan to criticise any other party or political leader but to recount the achievements his government had made thus far.
The premier also announced Rs 20m for the DG Khan District Bar Association and Rs 1m for the Rajanpur bar. The PM inaugurated the regional campus of the AIOU and sub-campus of the BZU.
Earlier, the AIOU Vice-Chancellor, Dr Nazir A Sangi, and BZU’s Prof Dr Zaffarullah Khan presented the welcome address. The city was sealed before the arrival of the prime minister and police vans, prisoner vans and private buses were parked to block the New College Road, Railway Road, Bank Road, Faisal Chowk, Link Jampur Road, Cafe Waqar, Model Town Road for vehicular traffic and pedestrians.
Agencies add: Promising development of the region, PM Gilani said: “I will ensure that the region witnesses a sea-change.” He said setting up of the IT University in DG Khan would provide an opportunity to the local youth to get modern education.
Gilani said with the appointment of Governor Latif Khosa, things were definitely going to improve. Later, addressing a public meeting at the inauguration of Muzaffargarh Bypass Road, PM Gilani stressed that terrorism and extremism needed to be eradicated to improve law and order, boost economy and bring foreign investment. “Terrorism has to be eradicated to create an atmosphere in which everybody can make investment without any fear.”
The PM praised the people of Muzaffargarh for bravely facing the calamity of floods and said such display of strength could not be seen anywhere else in the world. Gilani said the Head Muhammadwala Project costing three billion rupees, which was launched on the directives of Benazir Bhutto, would be completed soon.
He said the PPP had restored to its original form the Constitution of 1973, which was the achievement of Zulfikar Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto. “We are strengthening the state institutions created under the 1973 Constitution to fulfil the dream of Benazir Bhutto,” he said.
The PM accepted the demand of Minister of State for Finance Hina Rabbani Khar for bricklining of the Muzaffargarh Canal and reconstruction of DG Khan-Multan Road.
Later, administering an oath to the newly-elected office-bearers of the Multan Press Club at the local airport, the prime minister urged the media to play its role with responsibility in the war against terrorism and reiterated the government’s resolve to eliminate the menace of terrorism from the country.
He handed over a cheque of Rs70 million to the President of the Multan Press Club Shakeel Anjum for payment to the Punjab Journalists Housing Foundation for the plots allotted to media persons in Journalists Colony, Multan. He also announced a grant of Rs7 million for the local press club. Gilani said he had accepted all the demands of the media in his last meeting with the representatives of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS).

Former Pakistani President Farooq Leghari has died after a long illness.Mr Leghari helped found the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) which now leads the country's coalition government.He served as president for four years in the mid-1990s, dismissing the government of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 1996.The country's eighth president, he resigned before completing his five-year term after differences with the next Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif.Born into a wealthy political family - his father served as a cabinet minister soon after independence - Mr Leghari studied at Oxford University before returning to Pakistan to join the civil service.He was a founding member of the PPP under future Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in the 1960s.Mr Leghari served a brief stint as foreign minister in 1993 during Benazir Bhutto's second period in government.After his resignation as president, he founded the centrist Millat Party and was elected to the National Assembly in 2002 elections as its leader.His funeral is being held on Wednesday in his home town of Choti Zaireen in the province of Punjab.

He said that people were fully aware of Leghari’s ‘ungrateful’ politics and they also knew well that on what channel and on whose behalf he was speaking now.
Reacting upon the interview of former President Farooq Leghari, Rana Sanaullah said that if Farooq Leghari came down from his ‘Bunker’ Choti Zeereen, he could see that number of developments and welfare projects were being implemented in the Punjab under the leadership of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Farooq Leghari knew it well the way Nawaz Sharif had rendered him powerless by disarming him of 58(2)b, Shahbaz Sharif would end the empire of these so called feudal class by granting their rights to the people, he underscored.

The word ingratitude is meant for Farooq Leghari as allegiance and loyalty were not running in his blood, he held. It was major mistake of Benazir Bhutto and PPP to repose trust on him as such persons are put down in the pages of history in name of Mir Jaffer and Mir Sadiq, he observed.

The lawmaker was not at home at the time and most of the dead and injured were people shopping or working at the market. The lawmaker whose home was hit, Zulfiqar Khosa, is a senior member of the Pakistan Muslim League-N party, which is in charge of the Punjab government but is in the opposition in the federal government.Police and politicians in Punjab are under pressure to crack down on militant networks that have long recruited in its poor villages and Islamic boarding schools.
The militants have staged several attacks in Punjab to illustrate their reach across the country, far beyond the northwest tribal regions bordering Afghanistan. Dera Ghazi Khan district is in Punjab but borders the country's other three provinces.Zulfiqar Khosa's son, Dost Mohammad Khosa, said two of his cousins were among the wounded."It was a direct attack on us," Dost Mohammad Khosa alleged, declining to speculate who was behind the blast.
Militants have mostly targeted security forces in recent months, but lawmakers and court buildings also have been attacked. There have also been at least three bombs in crowded markets, apparently aimed at causing civilian casualties and undercutting public support for the army offensive.

DERA GHAZI KHAN: At least 24 people were killed and more than 60 others injured in a suicide car bomb blast on Tuesday afternoon in front of the house of Zulfiqar Ali Khosa, Senior Adviser to the Punjab chief minister.
Police put the toll at 24, but Rescue 1122 workers said they had counted 33 bodies.
The explosion in the Khosa Market shook the entire Dera Ghazi Khan town, which has a population of 300,000, and left a 15-foot deep and 30-foot wide crater.
According to the district police chief, about 1,000kgs of explosives were used in the attack.
He said the head and a leg of the bomber had been found. Several women and schoolchildren were among the victims.
Scores of shops and vehicles were destroyed and the buildings of two banks were damaged.
A witness told Dawn that the blast took place after the bomber tried to ram his car into Mr Khosa’s house.
The house and a nearby settlement, Basti Sheikhan, bore the brunt of the strike. An injured shopkeeper, Saeed Ansari, said the blast jolted his shop and he was trapped under the debris.
He called the rescue service from his cell phone. The rescue operation began promptly and search for bodies and injured people was under way till late in the evening.
The adviser’s family was not at the house when the attack took place, but his nephew Ali and niece Sidra were injured.
Rescue 1122’s official in charge said 40 injured people were admitted to the district headquarters hospital.
Dr Parwaiz Haider Altaf, a local official, said several of the injured were in critical condition.
He said doctors from the entire district had reached the DHQ hospital to cope with the emergency. He said the hospital had received 20 bodies.
On Feb 5, 27 participants of a religious gathering in the town were killed in a suicide attack.
Our Multan correspondent adds: Seven people injured in the Dera Ghazi Khan blast, most of them children, were admitted to the Nishtar Hospital.
AFP adds: Dera Ghazi Khan Commissioner Hassan Iqbal said: ‘The bomber rammed the explosive-laden car into the entrance’ of the market.
He said a body was later found in the car. He said many people were trapped in the rubble after the blast demolished around 10 shops.
‘It was a terrorist activity, similar to those being carried out in other parts of the country.’
The local hospital was ill-equipped to cope with heavy casualties and Mr Iqbal said special arrangements had been made for the supply of medicines. A helicopter was used to ferry the critically wounded to Multan.
A police official said the Khosa Market was the busiest shopping centre in the town. A mosque was also damaged, he added.

Fort Munro is a hill station in Dera Ghazi Khan which lies on the Quetta Road at 85 km from Dera Ghazi Khan city in the Sulaiman Mountains Range. Its altitude is 1800 meters (6,470 feet) above sea level and attracts many people for short stays during the summer.

Sardar Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari (born May 29, 1940) was President of Pakistan from November 14, 1993 until December 2, 1997. He was the first Balouch President of Pakistan.

Sardar Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari was born in Choti Zareen, a village of Dera Ghazi Khan District, Punjab on May 29, 1940 during the British Raj. He comes from a political family that has been active in politics in this part of the world since the pre-colonial days. His father Sardar Muhammad Khan Leghari and grand father Nawab Sir Muhmammad Jamal Khan Leghari had both been ministers.leghari is the major landowner who owns about 2500 acres of land.

After his initial schooling at Aitchison College, Lahore where he was the head boy and declared the Best Leaving Student of 1957. He graduated with honours from the Forman Christian College, Lahore, Punjab where again he was amongst the best students, he went on to study PPE at College Oxford University.

After returning to Pakistan he joined the Civil Service and served for some time in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). On the death of his father he resigned from service and came back to his roots to look after the tribal affairs of his tribe. He is the head (Sardar) of the Leghari tribe.

He joined the Pakistan Peoples Party, and was made leader of the party upon the imprisonment of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He was put under house-arrest several times during the military regime of General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.

In 1993, with the express support of the Pakistan Peoples Party he ran for the office of President and won the election against Wasim Sajjad. In November 1996, utilizing his powers under Article 58 2(b) of the Constitution of Pakistan[1], he dismissed the Peoples' Party Government of Benazir Bhutto on charges of corruption, lawlessness and extra judicial killings.

Following the word of the Constitution of Pakistan he held elections for the National Assembly in 1997. The elections were won by the Pakistan Muslim League and Nawaz Sharif was elected Prime Minister. A decisive majority in the lower house of parliament led the Sharif Government to remove the controversial 8th amendment from the constitution of Pakistan. Leghari saw this as a threat to his power and conspired with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Sajjad Ali Shah, to sack the Sharif Government. This led to an uprising against him and Shah, forcing both to resign.

Instead of retiring from politics, he went on to create his own political party, the Millat Party, which entered into a coalition of seven parties, known as National Alliance, to participate in the general elections of 2002. The National Alliance, emerged as the 3rd largest group in the parliament and won 13 seats in the National Assembly. He entered in a coalition with the majority party to form the government, and his son Awais Leghari was made a federal minister for Telecom and IT, as a consequence, and another of his deputies Yar Mohammad Rind also was inducted in the Federal cabinet. Later Mohammad Ali Durrani and his niece Sumaira Malik from his party were inducted into the Federal Cabinet.

With National Alliance being merged with ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Q) in May 2004 to form united Pakistan Muslim League, Farooq Leghari also became the member of the newly constituted party, with his son Awais Leghari being one of its senior vice presidents.

His elder son Jamal Leghari has recently been elected to the Senate of Pakistan. His daughter Faryal Leghari is an analyst and researcher in Security & Terrorism Studies at the Gulf Research Center in Dubai.

Choti Zareen is the ancestral village of the Balochi Aliani clan of the well-known Leghari tribe. It is located in the Dera Ghazi Khan District of Southern Punjab, Pakistan.

D.C Garden
Its area is 81 canals and 3 marlas. Divisional Public School and Wild Life Park was also the part of DC Garden. Although it is administrative and residential area but it has natural greenery same like past. D.G.Khan administration has made the D.G.Khan officers club, where the officers use to play games like squash, badminton, and tennis. It has the beautiful building in this area. Company Bagh
This is called the second garden of the city. East Indian Company made the company bagh in every district. This is known as company bagh. Its area is 162 canals and 12 Marlas. In 1948 a friends club was made in this area. Company bagh is used to play Football, Hockey, Volley Ball, Badminton, Table Tennis and for other games.

History D.G.KHANThe city was founded at the close of the 15th century and named after Nawab Ghazi Khan Mirrani, son of Nawab Haji Khan Mirrani, a Balochi chieftain, who had declared independence from the Langhi Dynasty Sultans of Multan Together with two other Deras i.e. settlements, Dera Ismail Khan and Dera Fateh Khan, it gave its name toDerajat. Derajat eventually came into the possession of the British after the Sikh War in 1849 and was divided into two districts: Dera Ghazi Khan and Dera Ismail Khan. After the partition of india, many of the city's Hindu residents settled in Derawal Nagar colony of Delhi, India The district of Rajanpur was later carved out of the Dera Ghazi Khan district. Some of them also settled in various part of India, including Bhiwani, Delhi, Jhansi, Ranchi, Ambala and Haridwar.Dera Ghazi Khan was founded in 15th century by Amar a Tribal Sardar of Mirani tribe. The old city of Dera Ghazi Khan was situated at the distance of 10 miles (16 km) towards east of the present city. In 1908, the old city of Dera Ghazi Khan was abolished due to heavy flood in the river Indus. Resultantly the existing city of Dera Ghazi Khan was came into being in the year 1910. The city is divided into different blocks. The British ruler established colonial system in the continent and declared D.G.Khan as district in the year 1849. General Court Land was appointed as first Deputy Commissioner of this District. Keeping in view the rapidly increasing population of the area and deteriorating law and order situation district D.G.Khan was divided in two districts i.e. D.G.Khan and Rajanpur. Presently there are two revenue sub division of the District. A tribal belt/political area spread along with western side of the District. Mirani tribe has been extinct three centuries ago. The population according to the 1901 census of India (then a British colony) was 471,149 - the great majority being Bloch Muslims. The frontier tribes on the Dera Ghazi Khan border include the LASHARI, JARWAR, QASRANI Bozdar Khosa Leghari Khetran, Gurchani,Mazari,JASKANI Marri ,mirani,Bughti and Malghani Ramdani tribes. Encyclopaedia Britannica 11th edition published in 1911 mentions Baluchs of this area as:“Frank and open in his manners, fairly truthful, faithful to his word, temperate and enduring, and looking upon courage as the highest virtue, the true Baluch of the Derajat is a pleasant man to have dealings with ”There are petroleum and gas reservoirs in district Dera Ghazi Khan at sites rodho, zindapir, afiband, Dhodhak etc. The Koh-e-Sulaiman Range constitutes a major part of this area, This range is full of naturl deposits like Marble & Lime Stone. A big cement plant DG Cement is also situated in Kofla Sattai Tehsil Dera Ghazi Khan.

Dera Ghazi Khan (Urdu: ڈیرہ غازی خان) is a ditrict in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The district covers an area of 5,306 m² and it is a long narrow strip of country, 198 m. in length, sloping gradually from the hills which form its western boundary to the river Indus on the east.Below the hills the country is high and arid, generally level, but sometimes rolling in sandy undulations, and much intersected by hill torrents, 201 in number. With the exceptions of two, these streams dry up after the rains, and their influence is only felt for a few miles below the hills.The eastern portion of the district is at a level sufficiently low to benefit by the floods of the Indus. A barren tract intervenes between these zones, and is beyond the reach of the hill streams on the one hand and of the Indus on the other. Although liable to great extremes of temperature, and to a very scanty rainfall, the district is not unhealthy.The Sulaiman Mountains rise to a height of 10,000 feet (3,000 m) in the north of the district[1].

There were many things on my schedule when I travelled from Multan to Quetta by road instead of rail: to see the tomb of Ghazi Khan, to visit famous Fort Monro and familiarize myself with this less travelled rout to Quetta.
For those who take their chance for the first time to the city, it might sound too good to be true but Dera Ghazi Khan (D G Khan) in the past was known as Dera Phullan Da Sehra "land of flowers". The canal skirted its eastern side, fringed with luxurious gardens of mango trees, while ghats lined the bank, thronged in summer by numerous bathers.
Ghazi Khan Mirani son of a Baloch chieftain Haji Khan founded the city on his own name on the tract between Suleman Range and River Indus in 1474. Bannu-Dera Ismail Khan-Jacobabad, famous trade route of the ast ran through the city. It developed into a very beautiful and prosperous city of that time. Till 1758, eighteen princes of the Ghazi Khan's family successively ruled the city and bore the names of their ancestors, wrote Mr. Bruce in his account in 1869. Kalhoras, Durranis, Mughals, Abbasis and Sikhs also exercised control over the city before it fell to the British. Mighty River Indus had been steadily and gradually shifting its course westwards for a long time. D G Khan remained on the mercy of the River and great floods occurred in 1812, 1833, and 1842. It was completely washed away in 1856. The River now flows over the site of ancient dwelling.
The founder Ghazi Khan Mirani would not be able to recognize the "new" city that was planned by British engineers on the principle of "Grid Iron Pattern" - all roads and streets meeting at right angle - and built on present location between the period from 1900-1910 about 15 Kilometres downstream on the bank of Manika Canal near the tomb of Ghazi Khan Mirani.
Let us just assume it: D G Khan was a great town on the bank of Indus in fifteenth century. Does the town even exist? Yes, only in history books. Many things combine to show that D G Khan was a gem in the time gone by.
One of the most exciting buildings of the past is the tomb of Ghazi Khan Mirani. The tomb was built in fifteenth century on an octagonal plan, like shrine of Shah Rukn-e-Alam in Multan, with battering walls and corner turrets. Standing in front of the tomb, dismayed, I could feel the depredation and vandalism that would have few parallels. Dome and upper story of the tomb have vanished.
The main entrance to the chamber of the tomb is in the East with two smaller doors in the northern and western directions are stripped of the gates. There are 11 mud graves inside the tomb and a graveyard has spread around the tomb. The walls are pitted. The pitchi cari and calligraphy inside the tomb is also fading. The slabs of stone painted with floral and geometric designs are falling. Once magnificent and imposing tomb is now sinking in ground. No body comes to lay flower or pay respect to the dead Baloch Sardar. In the past it had also been used to keep the animals. Relics of the tomb are certainly precious. Unfortunately, currently, D G Khan, more than any other Pakistani city, lacks sensitivity to its heritage. The condition of temples, dharam shalas and gao shalas is even worse. Most of them have been converted into residential quarters, some are being used as waste receptacles and from few others even the bricks have been taken away. "To retain the heritage and history of the city, at least two temples situated east of Tounsa-D G Khan Road and whatever is left of Ghazi Khan's tomb should immediately be declared as protected monuments", says Hashim Sher Khan, a social activist who has written to many national and international agencies including UNESCO for this purpose, "but to no avail" he adds. D G Khan of Waderas, Sardars and Tumandars and patriots like Sher Muhammad who made world Pakistani as part of his name seem to be on its way to decline.
Hashim Sher Khan says, "Dera Ghazi Khan is the cultural capital of Pakistan. It is not only geographically situated on the junction point of all the four provinces but is also a place where their cultural traditions meet". Besides legendary hospitality, the most famous cultural symbols I encountered in the city during my stay are hamachas and tabaqs.
A son of the soil, Dr Ghulam Fareed once narrated a tale about his childhood to Raza Ali Abdi (BBC). The tale reads, "Big charpoys (coats) are found in every nook and corner of the city. These coats serve as open drawing rooms in the localities. There was one big coat in front of our house too. The day I left D G Khan for higher studies, I saw people sitting on that coat: talking, relaxing, and sharing. I saw the same people sitting, doing same things, once I returned from England after 15 years. Only they had gone a little old." D G Khan is famous for big charpoys locally known as Hamachas throughout the country.
Another thing for which D G Khan is famous is tabaq meaning cooking utensil with wide mouth. Nanbais prepare meat and beef dishes in these utensils. British traveller Alexander Bern who came to D G Khan in 1936-37 wrote that there were 1597 shops in the city out of which 40 were of nanbais. Once the new city was inhabited, the nanbais also migrated and set up their shops in Pathar Bazaar. Now most of them have developed and converted their shops in modern eating joints but you can still find any thing from Nalli Nihari for breakfast to Siri Pae for dinner if you like. The only difference is that Tabaqs are made of cast iron instead of clay these days. Names of Ustad Allah Yar, Ustad Qader, Ustad Allah Ditta and Ustad Muhammad Siddique who were the best Tabaqis of their times are still remembered with respect.
As per the legend, the throne of Prophet Hazrat Suleman (A S) once landed on the hill range known as Suleman Range. Next to the city on the route to Quetta is Fort Munro Peak in Suleman Range. The first thing that came to my mind after turning on a rocky road to Fort Munro from village Khar (or Kharar) was a famous couplet that was composed by poet Mustafa Zaidi who was once a Political Assistant in Fort Munro. The poet lived here soaking up the scenery and isolation while contemplating his own future and love life. He composed, â€œInhe pathroon pe chal kar agar aa sako to aao, mere ghar ke raste main koi kahkashan nahin heyâ€�. The going on the road these days is bad that gets worst in case of a light shower. Later, I also visited the library that was established by Mustafa Zaidi but now it has been converted into an office of some government department. By the way, who wants to read these days?
